Lauren's Arena Battle Padme Amidala WIP

Post by LollyLozy » Sun Oct 04, 2020 3:26 pm

Hi everyone :)

I've finally decided to take on making arena battle Padme! I've done a breakdown of what I need to make from the costume standards and made a mockup, I'm excited about making this and hopefully I can start getting materials soon.

So for this part of the costume I've created a pattern so the seam runs from the neck to the cuff and tailored it to fit me with a stretchier material. I made a mock up for this using scrap material but since it doesn't account for stretch it's far too fitted. I'm thinking about going for lycra cotton(?) for the material but I'm not too sure yet.
The section just below the collar looks like it could be cut out of the front and then another piece of material sewn back in, which might work well so I can do the vertical pintucks on the material before sewing it in.

Leggings
Might be using the same material for the leggings too? Since the leggings have four seams at the front and back I'll probably create them with four pieces and sew them together.

Boots
No clue what to do with these yet, I've been looking up buying replica boots but more often than not the shinguard's are made of fabric and not accurate at all. I might see if I can find some boots online that I can modify afterwards.

Anyway! I'm open to suggestions on these if anyone has any advice for me before I begin the final piece, I'll post some of my progress soon :)

Hi Lauren, great to see you here.

Here's the standard:

Heres the costume thread index on global, you might have to scroll a bit but all the wips and tutorials are there:
http://www.forum.rebellegion.com/forum/ ... 92#1028492

The detachment website with references:
http://www.senate.rebellegion.com/

Exhibits refs and other guides:

Heres the facebook group, which is really good (just remember to update your WIP here too ;) )
https://www.facebook.com/groups/1979127522373156

The standard calls for a knit fabric. You dont want it to be too thin.......I'll give Kat a poke to come give some advice.

I would mock up your pattern in a cheap stretch cotton knit, so you know it will fit right....i usually grab something super cheap from fabricland.

There is info for mod'ing boots but im pretty sure the big custom boot makers will do them. I'll have a little look.

Thank you for the links, the WIP's are super helpful! I've had a little look and I'm going to pick up some cheap stretch fabric so I can make a mock up that fits :)

Fab, pop us up a pic once you are done :)

I had a chat with kat and she did have some good fabric suggestions, so I'd hold on buying a 'real' fabric till you've had a chat with her.

Yay, someone else to struggle Padme with at the same time :-)

Good luck on this one, I love the outfit but can't do it myself due to the sith tattoo on my spine...

Haha I'm glad there are other people trying to work out her costumes too! That's great, I might pop her a message soon and have a look out for fabrics, I'm waiting on some cheap material being delivered that'll work and hopefully be stretchy enough. I've also bought a trouser pattern that will might work as a base with a little bit of tweaking here and there, if not I can use it elsewhere!

Quick update!

I've drawn out a pattern and made a quick mock-up of the leggings, I made this out of some cheap see-through material with four pieces sewn together. I'm SO glad I did this first since I overestimated the size (It ended up looking a bit like Hoth Leia trousers) so I'll be bringing in my pattern a tad to get more stretch. Also making a few more changes and adding more excess material to the waist and folding it down to create the waistband, if anything looks off let me know! I've just got some scuba twill knit fabric from minerva (thank you so much to Kat for the advice!) so I can get going with the final thing once I've made the changes.

Also I've found some boots from CrowProps but I wanted to check if they are RL approvable? I've checked it against reference pictures and it looks accurate and the best ones I've found so far but I'm not entirely sure - https://crowprops.bigcartel.com/product ... oots-shins

Looks good Lauren! would have to see a more 'complete' mock-up or see them on to give like full feedback, but the seams that are there look right n are well placed :)

crowprops boots are pricey but really nice quality and its great that they can be made custom. I have a pair of crowprops for another costume and love them. The Padme ones look pretty accurate too, i cant see any issues with clearance or anything, personally. They look good :)x

I would always mock up in a cheap stretch, if the final thing is in stretch.......I am however the queen, of I hate 'real fabric' and trying to break my own record for the number of mock up I can make ;)

Lovely thank you!! I’ve got some better material on the way so once I’ve done some adjusting I’ll post one with it on and different viewpoints as well, and CrowProps are a tad pricey but they seem really good quality so I’ve ordered some as well, also great that they’re custom!

Oh and I’m exactly the same, I have material everywhere and like 3 mock-ups on the go already

Received my 3D print of the Naboo blaster! There’s quite a bit of sanding and tidying left to do before I begin to paint but pretty happy, I have the option of the long or short barrel so I’ll paint and finish both options and update when I’m done

Update,

So I’ve sewed the trousers and I’ve found the pattern has run a little bigger than my fit (and longer), since I only have it in this size so can I take in the two sides of the leggings to make a tighter fit? I’m pretty amateur when it comes to sewing so any advice would be amazing.
Also I’ve found the topstitching I did has made the seam tug in places so not too sure if I need to make any adjustments there.
