Crait Leia - (brown cloak and dress from The Last Jedi) WIP

Post by stripeythecat » Mon May 06, 2019 9:47 am

I've wanted to do this one since I saw the film but knew my sewing skills were nowhere near up to it - (have you seen that collar?!) - but I've been incredibly fortunate in getting Kat to agree, as a special one-off, to do the dress and cloak for me. Hooray, hooray  Suitable fabrics seem to have taken decades to source and I will post photos here. The standards are not quite finalised but there has been A LOT of discussion about colour and texture for both the dress and the cloak. This is what we have at the moment - (it's at the bottom of the page)

I'm also in the Facebook costuming group for this. At least this is one occasion where being short, middle-aged and greying are assets!

Awesome to see you doing this. I can't think of anyone better for this version.

Very excited to see you get this sorted Alex

Really lovely choice Alex, I do like older leias costumes. Look forward to seeing it come together.

Also pics for you :)

Jewellery wise, she wears gold cuff earrings, a double stoned blue/gold ring and a three stranded gold bracelet on her right hand, with an amazing large opal type ring on her left hand. Both the rings are worn with her other Last Jedi outfit.

This was the ring from Etsy -www.etsy.com/listing/684447898/decorati ... ch_click=1
and this is what I should have got for the earrings - www.etsy.com/listing/622787617/leia-org ... ck=1&bes=1
I think I had to pay customs on both (which was more than I'd thought it would be)

Best costume from the film for me. I had better get started on my Crait Luke then.

This is the beautiful opal type ring Leia wears on her left hand.

There is one on Etsy but it's rather pricey so this is what I've made, using an existing dichroic glass cabochon ring which I bought online.

I tried various methods to create the gold "claws" which were apparently made by trickling wax. I attempted gold ceiling wax but that came out in big blotches. The best version I tried was a type of gold cord (to hang a pendant from), with an added blob of gold paint at the end. It was nice and 3D but it wouldn't curve, bend or stick where I wanted it to.

In the end I used this tube of "paint" which I found to be the best of the puff/glitter pens. I'm sure a more able hand could get thinner lines which would have looked better. I applied each line two or three times to get more depth.
