Chewbacca WIP

Post by humperdingle » Tue Feb 04, 2020 9:37 pm

Hi, i’ve just started getting the gear together for a Chewbacca / generic wookiee build.

I’ve had some tips and hints from the best Wookiee there is... Paul Smith, who I’ve trooped with on several occasions, and is simply just Chewie at his best. I can never hope to live up to his standards of work but this will be a great learning process for me.

The skill of my work, or lack thereof, will probably determine the type of clearance
As I have zero experience of the hairy one (i’m more used to cobbling TKs together), i’m under no illusion that this will be a very time consuming and possibly frustrating period.

But hey, why not?!

Anyway, a quick rundown of what i’ve order and plan to order:

Chewie mask kit
From Paul Humphries

Hair from Cyberlox:
Pre-blended type (please tell me these are the right colours!)
101864 CyberloxShop Infinitique Kanekalon Jumbo Braid - Honey Brown
101865 CyberloxShop Infinitique Kanekalon Jumbo Braid - Dark Gun Metal

Voice Module:
TRamp with 4 finger remote

Mesh suit:
From the talented Mr Phil Howard.

Stilts:
Haven’t decided yet but looking at self-made,

Do these look OK? Not sure about the shape of bottoms of the buckets...https://worktall.co.uk/product/worktall-standard/

Or decorator style stilts.

Bandolier:
I dabble in leatherwork, so i’ll be building this myself.
Have ordered 2mm and 4mm thick leather. 4mm for the belt and 2mm for the bag, so it looks a bit floppier. I’ll dye these myself.

The small boxes will be the same diecast aluminium project boxes used on the original.

Similarly, the large boxes will be hand-fabricated with sheet aluminium. I made these for my Greedo and they’re relatively easy to make (and much cheaper than buying-in).

But a question if you don’t mind

1. Regarding inserting hairs around A wookiee’s face, i’ve heard that crown punch needle is the easiest to use... any tips?

Hi Mark.

The hair is correct and if you want advice on the worktall buckets, Dave Gilmore will be able to help as he uses a similar pair. If you want you can always try out mine to see how you go with and it’ll give you options.

What I use for hair punching on the mask is a small pin vice with a standard sewing needle inserted back to front and then just cut half the eye off.

As for Chewie or generic you need to decide before you start hairing the face or latching the suit, as the judges won’t clear a generic if it’s to close to Chewie (hair pattern on body and face etc).

If you choose the generic route there’s a lot more freedom with your design, you will get more trooping time at the bigger conventions (as you don’t have the issue of one Chewie at a time) and generally a lot of the general public will see a Wookiee and think it’s Chewie anyway.

If you’re going with Chewie there are a number of WIPs and Cleared threads on this forum and loads on the Global forum that are well worth checking out.

http://forum.rebellegion.com/forum/view ... 3bb10d28db

As always we’re here to help anyway we can so just ask away and you know where I am if you need a closer look at anything.

hope this helps

Regards
Paul

Thanks Paul, i’d definitely like to pay you a visit to check things out :)

If I went down the generic route, presumably i’d need to rethink my current plan to make a Chewie bandolier, or can generics use the same bandolier?

Hi mark .
You helped me get my tk up to centurion over on ukg :)

Your in good hands with Paul . Him and Jamie got me through my build .
Lots of questions and finally i got there.

Here some reference shots of what i done with the high steppers .
Should also be in my wip .
I know someone who just modified the work tall boots too

Mine are Little different to the work tall boots but i was going for the 7 feet 6 mark ( even though anything over 7 ft i belueve is clearable ) so 12 inch lifts were not enough for me :) .but if going for side supports then the principle should be very similar.

Utilising surpro leg band kit and 2mm ali tubing

Will help out where i can from the experience and advice ive gained and been given from my build :)ImageImageImageImageImage

You have a couple of options if you decide to go generic. You can still complete the bandolier as it will be good experience and use it for no RL events similar to what Phil did when helping Keith out a capital or change up the design and do something similar to what the Wookiee’s wear in ROTS with the armour. Again Phil would be able to help you out with this as he also made his armour or check out Keith’s build in useful links section.

Aah yes Dave, I knew I recognised the name! I just sold the TK but y’never know, might get another at some stage... like maybe after I make a mess of this :D
Cheers for the pics, i’d already had a look over the WIP and they look nice and easy to use, albeit expensive to import. I’ll check out Paul’s home made lifts and see how it goes from there :)

Paul, yeh that sounds like a plan. With regard to generic Wookiees, can I match Chewie’s colouration or does it need to be different?

You should be fine with the two colours if you go the generic route. You just have to make it distinctive from Chewie. For example OT Chewie has all brown legs but grey patches in either side from just above the knee to waist. The top is almost a 50/50 split of brown and grey on the back. The arms are also approx. Grey from elbow up. So for a generic if you did say grey area around the feet with the rest brown. Arms could be completely black etc. Whatever you chose it has to be symmetrical.

Ok, I think I’d regret it if I didn’t go for Chewie straight off the bat :) Hope I can do him justice :)

Chewbacca / Generic Wookiee build

Post by humperdingle » Wed Feb 05, 2020 2:00 pm

Can anyone tell me how long the bandolier is in total, including the tapered pieces at the end?
The large boxes - the CRL isn’t specific on sizes. A chap over on UKG sells them as officer boxes. Are these an acceptable size (3.5”x2.5”x1”), and are the boxes generally wider than the leather width?
And the dimensions of bag, including width of gusset, if possible :)Image

Bag is 330x270x30mm
Strap is 1.88m x 90mm

Can’t comment on the officer boxes as I haven’t seen them. For Chewie’s bandolier you have to have 19 equality spaced boxes 10 large & 9 small. The majority of bandoliers I’ve seen have the boxes the same width as the strap and if there is any overlap it’s minimal, for OT Chewie anyway.
