CLEARED Jyn Erso WIP

So as the forum decided to go pear shaped, I have decided to try and get my WIP re-written, however a little shorter than it originally was.

So the list of component parts:
* Leather gloves
Fingerless, fasten around the wrist with strap approximately 1" in width across the top of the hand. Circular detailing on the back of both hands. Stitched large circle with leather insert in the same brown leather as the gloves, line of stitching across the circle, across the hand, as per pictures.

* Trousers
High waisted fitted Navy trousers. Approximately 2.5" waistband. Canvas/nylon type strap sewn around the knee, fastening on outer edge of leg. Vertical seam where there would normally be a pleat. Finish level with the top of the boots.

*under tunic
Loosely fitted around the body, 3/4 length sleeves, cross-over neckline, as per photos. Unsure at present in regards to the back of the tunic. Dark teal colour

*jacket
full length sleeves to the top of the wrist bone and ribbed top to the to of the sleeves

*flight vest
2 low breast pockets with diagonal openings at the top. 2 canvas type straps on each side at the top, near the yoke of the vest at the front. Quilted/padded back of the vest. Brown vest with horizontal sepia strips.

Belt and Holster
Leather, brown. Belt to start on left side of body and diagonally to top of hip bone on right of body. Holster in same leather suspended from belt.

Blaster
Metallic silver and mid-dark grey, as per seen on screen. Must fit in holster.

Baton
Textured surface, with folded central section, which may or not unfold. Suspended from the belt, behind the holster.

Code cylinders
Two, in metallic silver, with silver coloured clip holding them in place in the right vest pocket. Similar in size to those used by Imperial officers (?)

Boots
Brown or worn black leather. Lace up, with strange cover for laces.

Scarf
Light grey/lavender undertones, canvas or similar fabric with top stitching detailing approximately halfway round. Ends of scarf have diagonal points. Scarf to end approximately behind the knees when looped around the neck, fully. Must be wide enough that can be pulled over the hear to form a hood, without any hair or skin showing at the back.

Brown wig
Styled with rough parted fringe, framing sides of face. Hair to be loosely pulled into small bun at nape of neck. No visible pins or net.

Boots - I believe that the originally used ones are laced, as per


So the boots that I have, are



However obviously I do not have the tops turned over like that, but rather laced up the leg.
They were a current line being stocked by Clarks in the UK.
They are soft leather, smooth over the toe area and raw leather as you go up the boot.

The turn over that they display folded, I have unfolded which makes the boot a better style. Obviously I will need to add the covers and buckles but I'm really happy with the boots. They are so comfortable.

The screen used boots were Veronicas, however at nearly $300 plus shipping and import tax, they would not be something I would be buying. If that boot was enforced, that would halt my build immediately unfortunately.

Hopefully once altered, the ones from Clarks will be a suitable alternative. And more affordable.

So, at further scrutinising of the visual guide and other shots, the right pocket appears to have a comms device and one cylinder, sometimes replacing comms with another cylinder item.

The trousers appear to be faded black, and the tunic is faded navy or dark blue. Not the teal as previously thought. I'll update my list to reflect this in a minute.

There would also appear additional strips of tape underneath each arm on the flight vest. These strips appear to go from the pocket to the seam underneath each arm.

So, hair colour will not be a requirement, however for me, as this is a face character it is a requirement so regardless I'm still going for the wig option (or hair dye if I must) as I wouldn't feel right doing Jyn with such blonde hair.

Why are there so few strong females in Sci Fi that are blonde!

So I shall be investigating getting a decent wig. If absolutely necessary I'll have to dye my hair, but being blonde naturally it might take professional assistance to get the shade right.

Hook found for front of vest.


Hooray for finding some of my Grandad's RAF stuff at my mums.

The hooks are from his kit and I think i should be able to repurpose more stuff as well.

The only thing that i need to look into is the comms device. It looks shinier than one I've seen in the past. That's probably going to be another visit to B&Q.

So anyway, because the whole entire task of working out exactly how to do the entire costume for Jyn is out of my scope, I have found a seamstress that is willing to take on this headache of a costume...

Whilst waiting for the seamstress, I need to work out and check off all the bits I still need to get. It is getting far too easy to lose track of what I've got/still need to get or find.

No pictures at the moment, but stock take has been completed. The only bit that I need to find at the moment are the slider clips for the trousers. I think that's the only bit I have missing.

I have the clips for the boots, but I'm not completely happy with them so I'll keep looking.

David is looking at getting the belt and holster sorted for me. I do have a basic one already but I'm not completely happy with that.

I'll also need to get some off cuts of leather for the boots, but I'm not about rushing into that bit at the moment.

Previously it has been commented that the vest/gilet was based M69 flak vest


However I'm inclined to disagree, and believe that it is more closely related to M52 vest as this is without the collar. The lacing on the sides of the original vests appears to be in the same place as the tape with a single eyelet punched in it of the Jyn version. The collar is also different between the original Vietnam versions.

However, this version of the flak vest gives insight into how the film version was constructed and why things are located as they are.


Obviously the Jyn-version doesn't have epaulettes but I believe this version is still closer. The seamstress has asked if it would be possible to get one so that she can see close up, the makeup of the vest. As a result of lots of trawling through Ebay, I have managed to find one cheap. If we ever have issues with bullets, I'll be fine!

A friend of a friend is going to be printing and painting a decent blaster for me, so although I do have a printed blaster I don't have to rush to work out how to paint is correctly. I've still got to paint the badge/buckle and the tonfa. I intend to replace the printed red rectangle on the badge with a press button of the correct size, as I believe that this is more accurate. This would make is the same type as the Imperial rank badges. I am also the proud owner of an airbrush.... Think I need to practice, a lot, before I attempt anything. After all, there's a couple of helmets that needs painting for different builds.

(These were finally used for the holes through which the cables on the vest came through. I knew that there was a reason that I bought them!!!)

First fitting of the toile done.

It was awesome. It felt so good. Just need to work out how to get the photos on to here... Need my computer really for that. But basically, the seamstress is doing an awesome job.








Just need to source all of the fabrics and get them sent to her.

In terms of the other pieces required, I sourced a better Kyber crystal.

Well, all fabrics have now purchased. And left with the seamstress.

Wow, over 16,000 steps later and only expecting to find a couple of fabrics, all fabric has been found, purchased and left with the seamstress.

And exhausting day, but a brilliant one. I'm very excited.

Shepherds Bush and Berwick Street.

Various shops, Mison were brilliant. But their stock is different in every store, so it involved going to all of them, as some samples had been ok'd from Berwick Street, but they didn't have them in Shepherds Bush.

But it was all good fun and everything is purchased.

So, with the fabric having been deposited with the seamstress, I decided to look at the bits that I had.

The gloves were bugging me somewhat as although I suspect the ones I had would probably clear, they weren't quite as accurate a the Black Diamond ones that everyone was raving about on the main forum.

I managed to find a supplier in Germany that was selling the gloves cheaper than Amazon. So I decided to bite the bullet and buy the gloves.



All whilst waiting for them to arrive, well the same night actually, I also ordered dark brown leather dye and primer because the first thing that you notice is that they're the wrong colour.

So, with a prayer to the gods of costuming I started applying the primer and then the dye.


2 coats later:


The I realised that I had painted them with the velcro still attached.... Grr!
Now I know the I've got to replace the straps and the Velcro needs removing but after two coats of dye that is what I ended up with.
