ESB Han Solo - *Cleared 14.01.18*

Post by Emperor Woody » Fri Jun 29, 2018 9:36 pm

Hello there!

I'm looking to join the RLUK with a version of everybody's favourite scoundrel -Han Solo. Particularly, the Empire Strikes Back version.

I am quite eager to clear this costume as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, my work commitments limit my available free time, so a start-from-scratch build may not be feasible to meet my ETA for the completed costume.

As an alternative, I am investigating which off the shelf bits and pieces would pass the clearance test with and without modification.

If anybody has worked on this costume in the past or is currently working on a version, I would very much appreciate any assitance or tips. Likewise, I will help others where possible.

Looking forward to being as scruffy looking a nerf herder as possible!

Soooooo pleased you're going to be working on this Scotty. Will and I will help where we can.

Gather as much research as possible. Don't forget you should have pics from SW Identities too. Will have a look for you as well. Post any pics of what you find.

Good luck. And may the force be with you

Hi, are you wanting to do the Bespin and Hoth versions or just one of them?

Cool, are there any parts you have sourced already?
And are you in any hurry to complete this costume build and get it cleared?

Okay, so here is how I'm approaching this at the moment. One piece at a time.

Jacket -
Star_Wars_Empire_Strikes_Back_Han_Solo_Jacket__54260.jpg
From what I can ascertain, the jacket was made with a medium/heavyweight cotton twill or possibly linen canvas. Colour of fabric was a light stone, charcoal which appeared a navy blue on film.

I haven't been able to source reliable reference for the jacket interior but if I was to hazard a guess I would say the lining was probably a flannel backed satin.

Medium weight fusible interfacing would be preferred for adding the required rigidity to the fabric.

This is the jacket I'm eyeballing -
magnolihan.jpg
The Magnoli Falcon jacket is the best off the shelf version of the jacket that I have found so far.

My only issue with this is the price. Normally, I have an unlimited costume budget but I am currently trying to save for Star Wars Celebration next year, so I am obviously trying to pinch pennies til then.

I have seen cheaper variants offered through the likes of CosplaySky and Jedi Robe but they look a little too "shiny" and lightweight.

I currently have an independent tailor on standby to tailor make the jacket but my only concern is that they use the appropriate twill weave.

Ideally, I'd like to get the costume finished by August as I have some annual leave during then and can concentrate on the bulk of the project. This isn't set in stone though so I can stretch to a bit longer.

The Magnoli jacket is very nice and similar to the one I own. My advice would be stay away from Jedi robe as it's not screen accurate and a waste of money. I'm not entirely sure about the cosplaysky version hopefully other can give advice. There are a couple of people making them on Etsy (mine was made by Corrilliandrygoods who I would recommend) but again it's pretty expensive. I'd put the bulk of your money into a decent holster rig and leather boots as I believe they really do set off the costume. When I started Han, I did so thinking it would be a relatively cheap costume......Here I am 3 versions in and a cost of around £3000+. I'd suggest making anything you can to off set the overall cost but again a good holster rig is worth it's weight in gold (metaphorically not physically haha).

Thanks for the advice, Justin! I'll definitely give Corilliandrygoods a look. I absolutely agree with you that the bulk of my money should go towards holster and boots as I feel they are what catch the eye. I'm on the lookout for a good quality holster but am also considering working on it myself if it turns out cheaper.

One of the reasons I was looking into Han was because I assumed it would be a cheaper costume to produce. You've clearly proven me wrong! £3000?!?! :D

Do you have a photo gallery of your costume, as I would be interested in seeing how yours has evolved/turned out.

Sure, I still have all of my WIP pics on my PC at home so I'll pop them on ASAP. Believe it or not as I have a holster rig for each version that's been the majority of the expense haha. Ah well can't take it with you

Thanks very much, buddy! Appreciate it.

Who would be your "go to guy" for the holster rigs? I've just been looking at MP Filmcraft and they look pretty damn good. Any other suggestions?

Also, would a 3D printed/plastic DL-44 be clearable? I fully intend on getting a proper metal one once I've finished saving for Celebration, but I'm just looking for a filler at the mo to get clearance.

I have an MP Filmcraft belt and it's really nice. I'd actually go for a Doopydoo's DL44 as they are pretty cheap but it's a great resin cast and it's weightier than a printed one.

As Justin has said, Filmcraft do the best version of the holster rig, however a cheaper option would be Todd's costumes.
Blaster wise I'll always recommend doopy dooes, good price, nice feel and weight to it.
Magnolia sells all the soft parts, but like you say his price isn't cheapest around

Hope it's OK to post this...
For my ESB Han I got the jacket pattern and had it made by a local seamstress. A cheaper alternative to magnoli even though I do have the shirt from them. I'll see if I can find a link for the jacket pattern.
I can also rate the Todd holster.

Of course it's OK Dan, Rebels encourage helping each other.

Thanks for posting possible alternatives and further suggestions.
