Complete: My BB8 Build

Post by DaveChaos » Thu Apr 18, 2019 10:05 pm

A couple of years ago I started my BB8, I was pretty new to the 3D print world but I went in head first. He turned out pretty good but not perfect. Fast forward to a few months ago I decided to apply new skills I have learned since starting to a refresh. This time i'm aiming for a fully functional droid. Here are a whole bunch of picture for you to enjoy :)

Most of these are of the new drive being constructed, I will post again with all the new panels as I work on them

I must have one! Awesome stuff.
Happiness is a warm A280. Or A300. Even a Glie-44 at a pinch.

That’s aweosme - I don’t really know what I’m looking at but the photos show how much work you’ve put in.
Great stuff, with R2s there’s multiple ways of building a droid, Is that the same for building a BB unit?
I’d be interested to know how much of the drive system is the same as what the production team used in theirs.

Thanks for sharing and I can’t wait to see him rolling around convention floors!

haha yeah there is a lot going on is those pictures, There are a few ways to do the dive depending on what you want your droid to do but when it comes to the build of the panels and dome 99% of the builders are 3D printing. I know R2 builders have a few more options as R2 is on wheels, weight is less of a factor.

This particular drive is based on the Disney version but heavily modified. here is a pic of that one
maxresdefault.jpg
Here is my progress so far, The drive is essentially done. I just need to do a little calibration and add in the lights for the sphere but I cant do that until I have all the panels. So now I start sanding!

Very cool. I have a BB-8 on the go too, using Carys sphere. I’ve not tackled the drive system yet as that scares the crap out of me.

Update time, So I have been busy printing and sanding for what seems like years... haha. But I am finally done with all the cosmetic stuff! The drive is operational but not dialed in just yet. I have a delivery of a new inner sphere due tomorrow as my previous metal frame you see on the pictures wasn't up to the job. Here are some pictures, enjoy :)

Looks so cool, I really want to learn how to do electronics. Do they talk you through it all in the droid builders, or do you need a certain amount of skill to begin with?

Yes and no. 3D printing the parts I would say is the easy bit but then you need to decide on how you're going to get him moving and the club has a few options. So depending on what road you go down depends on what kind of support you get. Some degree of knowledge can help you you can certainly learn along the way. My first BB8 took me two years to build, this one took 5 months.

Now that he is done I hope to bring him along to a troop some time!
