Moroff / Generic Gigoran WIP

Hi :)

Thought I'd get a thread up and started around my intended build. Most of the work will likely be next year but there are a few bits that I can start looking at in advance.

My initial plan on scaling is as follows (aiming for 7'3"), blue indicates my height + 30cm stilts. I'm intending on adding a mesh / vent in the breathing mask to see through.



I'm going to aim to complete the suit and chest box/harness to clear as a generic Gigoran, then start on belt, backpack and weapons to upgrade to Moroff.

Plan as follows:
Stilts - build and practice walking on. To get the correct height I'm looking at building these from scratch, smaller height drywall stilts seem to be too expensive.

Feet and Hands - frame / shape and foam padding for feet and hands

Body shell - looking at behind the scenes shots there seems to be a hard plastic shell for the waist, chest and shoulders. I'm going to look into making a mold and getting it pulled from ABS, and will then add holes across the structure for ventilation.

Foam - to take off the hard plastic feel I will use a thin layer of EVA foam on the body shell. This should then give me a template for...

Mesh suit - standard pyjama pattern for legs, aiming for a slightly more fitted torso.

Latch hooking - sweat, tears and frustration

Chest harness, box and breathing mask

Yes this is going to be a long build, and no I've not done anything of this scale before. Should be fun :) If there is anything I'm doing that could be improved on, adjusted or added to please feel free to comment!

Wow, this is going to be amazing! I'm sure some of our Wookiee costumers could give hints about stilts, feet/hands and the task of latch-hooking, so I'll leave that up to the experts! But I think your idea of going for the generic Gigoran first is a good one. Best of luck with this and if you have any questions as you go along, just ask!

This is going to be ammmmmazing. Have you been over to the main Rl forum, might be worth doing a WIP where the chewies or aliens are?

I have the plans for stilts now so should be assembling over the next month, then need to figure out how I'm going to create the mold for the body shell

You could ask on the RPF on facebook they seem to have some really good ideas.

Been speaking to the guy who's doing the ABS for me, looks like cutting from insulation board with a skin of filler over the top should be sufficient for a one off pull

Awesome! Speaking as a wookiee wrangler, the abs + foam sounds terrifying. I would be worried you would pass out.

Have you thought about American football armor? Or ice hockey armor? It would be soft and would breath better than abs. The current Wampa is hockey armor with muscle pads made from memory foam over the tip of it to bulk up the upper body.

Latching. Many nights, on the couch watching back to back movies followed by vacuuming the couch/floor/yourself because it looks like you're a shedding warewolf

What I'm currently thinking is to actually have vents cut into the ABS (and through the foam) kind of like a hockey mask to allow air to circulate. It won't be skin tight so I'll have some breathing space.

Long term plan is to have a coolant pack of some sort built into the backpack itself.

Ok, so zero progress so far, thanks to summer holidays, but keen to get back on track.

Had the opportunity to talk direct to Ian Whyte at Cardiff ComicCon, who was kind enough to give me some insights into the suit construction. Plastic bodyshell is a definite, backpack is going to be a challenge.

Apparently the Moroff costume was also reused for Senna in Solo, minus the body shell to make it look thinner.

That makes sense, a lot of folk thought it was Moroff during the Kessel escape but you could only really confirm it was the same alien race.
Did Ian give you much insight into how and what it was constructed from?

Not directly on materials, but I'm guessing ABS for the body shell. He said the worst bit overall was the backpack, which was pretty much mounted with a scaffold frame around his waist... so going to save that til last but need to plan ahead for mounting it.
