Luke Skywalker ROTJ WIP

Post by GeekForFun » Tue Mar 20, 2018 10:47 pm

Hi everyone, I'm going to be working on my first ever Star Wars cosplay aimed at RL approval. It's been a dream of mine since I first saw a bunch of stormtroopers parade behind their dark lord at a con.

In terms of planning, I'll be going with the pricer but high quality Clothears for the soft parts and belt. The gloves and boots aren't decided on yet, but any suggestions would be appreciated.

The lightsaber is the only one I'm unsure of. I am wary of Saberforge but the quality of their hilt can't be denied, and I'm not really sure if the Ultrasabers archon 3.1 would pass the judges.

I will update this thread when I can, however saving up for Clothears and then the eventual wait will mean this costume won't be ready for review until 2019. Ah well, I'm glad to be starting the journey!

Hi Alfie! Great to see you start your WIP. You've gone for the high-end option with Clothears but their work is amazing, so you can be sure you'll get a great costume and it will be worth the wait!

As for the saber, I'd recommend checking out JQ Sabers - they're based in Wales, so you don't get hit with customs charges as you would from Stateside saber firms, and their customer service is very good. I'm sure other Jedi will jump in with their own suggestions, too!

Slow and steady wins the race - it's better to take your time and get a well-made, clearable costume than to pull something slapdash together and have to resubmit several times. Keep updating your WIP with pics as you go along - we're here to help!

Luke Skywalker ROTJ WIP

Avoid Saberforge Alfie. JQ are great quality but do not currently have a run of Luke ROTJ Sabers going. It depends which saber you want to go for. There is the Hero, V2 or V3. I have a V2 and Hero and have recently done the V2 install myself so know my way round them now. There are much better vendors than the ones you have mentioned, including KR also UK based. The trouble with saber sis you need to get in on runs so timing is critical.

For boots, I cannot recommend enough that you go with leather first and foremost as you will need to be comfortable.

Regards Clothears, my Luke ROTJ is the Clothears version and is second to none so good call. I think I had the first one so will be great to have another quality Luke ROTJ on the boards. Need any help, costume or saber then feel to ask Image

In this photo, I am using a JQ Hero which although great quality, is not accurate to the movie prop, hence changing to my new V2 and Hero (KR)

Hi Alfie, welcome to Elstree!
Sounds like you're on a good path with Clothears. As for sabers, Lee is our resident Luke expert, so listen to his wisdom!

Thank you all so much! I'm new to saber building and I'm not at all confident in my ability to not muck it up haha, but I will definitely look into KR or JQ if they get another run going.

You're one of the big inspirations to me wanting to do this actually Lee, seeing your awesome work made me want to help give Luke a little more representation in the UK( I'm not a 100% sure but where you also the Luke at MCM Birmingham this past weekend?). So having you, and all the great folks here support is a dream come true. Will hopefully be able to give more tangible updates in the coming months.

Alfie do you know which saber you’d prefer and what budget you have? There are runs going on at the moment. Sadly there is no such thing as a cheap ‘decent’ saber and for an empty hilt, you’d be look at around £200 to £250. You would then have the cost of electronics and install fees on top of that. Before you buy anything saber related, please ask me. There is a Facebook group which is focused purely on the Luke ROTJ saber and it’s great for finding out the different versions, plus news on runs etc so request to join the group (I’ll pm you the name).

Yes I was the ROTJ Luke at MEM. You should have come and spoke as I would have been happy to go over the costume with you.

Clothears is a great choice but there will be a wait so I’d recommend you get order in sooner rather than later. They used to offer a payment scheme so you can pay monthly if it helps, so worth asking as you can then free up some ‘available’ funds to get in on a saber run

Between myself, Leigh Hawker, Scott Phipps and our base commander Mark Mulcaster, we have Luke well covered with various versions, and we also have a farm boy Luke in progress. I’m look by to add the Endor Strike Team version to my costume as well.

I'm looking into the Hero version, as as I prefer the cleaner look despite not being what was on screen the majority of the time. Budget wise I'm at £300- £400 at a push, but I am fine with starting smaller with just a hilt and then adding onto it once I have the main costume completed rather than everything at once. I was given the PDF of their payment scheme and am currently aiming to place an order closer to the end of the year. It will be a long 36 week wait but I'm patient enough to make sure I am secure with everything finance wise.

I did come up with my girlfriend as Kylo and Rey, but everything was hectic so I didn't think to ask then.

Luke Skywalker ROTJ WIP

Post by Lee UtdK » Thu Mar 22, 2018 8:29 pm

I remember you guys!!

Typically the Hero is the ‘least’ available at the moment plus a few that are coming out in the next year are looking more likely to be the TLJ version which is different to the ROTJ version.

Don’t let buying from the US put you off though. Both mine got through with no duty and taxes so if you see a good deal for a KR Hero or similar ($300 or less), then seriously consider it; they do not come around that often and are very highly thought of in the community.

Just something else to consider with the Hero saber. Although not a major issue, it isn’t a great saber to wear as a belt hangar. The tri-ring on the ROTJ hilt does align with the control box which means the box will kind of point in towards you making saber hang funny.

It’s not a massive problem and on the TLJ version of the hilt, they offset this by 90 degrees, possibly to get around this. On my JQ hilt, I did the same so it hung more naturally but of course, it’s the trade off between an accurate hilt and a practical hilt.

Of course you don’t have to hang it from the belt, but it’s a handy option for when the battery goes flat (which is usually 3, maybe 4 hours if you’re lucky).
