Scrumrat Han

Post by RedCupCosplay » Mon Jul 22, 2019 9:05 pm

So not long after seeing Solo I became absolutely obsessed with the opening sequence of the movie; Han hot-wiring the speeder, the return to Proxima's den, and his subsequent enlistment in the Imperial Navy. The whole aesthetic of that sequence, of Corellia and the beaten up, run down Costuming grabbed my imagination and refused to let go.

So not long after I made a decent budget version of the costume for around £35

Image

Now I'm back at it and looking to upgrade it massively... Whether or not I'll be at RL level with it remains to be seen, but stay tuned.

The first major part of these upgrades was to pattern a new vest. I'd previously heavily modified a ladies leather jacket and, while it didn't turn out too badly, it's far from accurate.

So I spent about an hour drafting a pattern and the following day I made a mock up. Overall I'm really happy with the proportions, some small adjustments needed but nothing major.

I decided early on that my vest would be a canvas alternative as using leather would be costly, and I feel fairly wasteful on a piece that gets slathered in white paint. I did a test run over a scrap of blue canvas I had lying around and I have to say I'm happy with how it turned out!

Image

Next up was to add to my under stocked original belt. When I first made the costume I didn't have a great deal of reference so it used to consist of the lock picks, the rectangular leather pouch, droid caller, and leather loop. Since then I've added the large shapeless pouch, the coaxium holster with Co2 cannister, and the visor. I made all of these with no patterns and used a combination of rattle can paints and acrylics to weather.

Image

Next up was one of the big jobs - Han's Corellia trousers are unique in the pantheon of Han costumes in that they're most like standard jeans - two standard front pockets and one rear patch pocket make them much easier to modify a pair of standard jeans. I did this by removing one back pocket and adding the large leather patch, I also sewed in a faux seam on the inside of each leg to create the illusion of the stripes being set in.

Image

Next up came adding the stripes themselves. I used siser brick vinyl - there was no grey available so I used white and weathered it down but I can confidently say I will NEVER use brick vinyl again... Not only will it not adhere properly regardless of how much heat you put on it, the show side is prone to melting, and it has a tendency to shift while warm too! Luckily the slight wonkiness of my stripes is easily disguised while wearing the trousers.

One of the few carry overs from my first take on this costume is the boots - these cost me £3 on eBay and I then used a combination of black, white, and brown acrylics to add that dirty, briney build up.

Image

The jeans also got a heavy pass of weathering in a similar manner! Here's my first test fit of the lower half of the costume... I've since added a little more light weathering to blend the top and bottom of the legs better.

I'm also slowly gathering parts for my final vest; the communicator greeblie is a 3D printed Jyn Erso I got from thingiverse and the Imperial disks are mud trooper ear disks from The Aluminium Falcon - I've of course ordered three!

That's all for now but stay tuned for more!

Minor updates:

One of the other carry overs from my budget build of this costume is the shirt. This is a waffle knit shirt from a high street store here in the UK that I got second hand on eBay and weathered by cutting the neckline and weathering with acrylics. I also sewed the sleeves so they stay pushed up as per the original shirt. I believe the SA shirt is a charcoal grey but mine is a blueish grey - with the weathering in place I feel they read very similarly.

Additionally my Imperial disks came in! These are from the Aluminium Falcon on Facebook and I couldn't be happier with them. They're threaded with an M3 screw hole on the back for easy mounting. I did a bit of weathering on these and tested my vest hardware on my painted test swatch. Feeling really happy with how this is looking!

Hey Chris, some great work there.....as this one has no standard we are just having a little look at the references. It would be really helpful if you could post up the ones you've used. :)

I saw you had posted on the standard discussion page on global, have you had any feedback on your WIP in fringe yet?

Hi buddy, since this will be a base first costume and not many worldwide (i think one was cleared recently in America).

Your build so far has been good, be interesting to see what feedback you get on the main detachment forum.
I can't wait to see pics of you trooping in it once its cleared :)

Hey! I've had a little feedback so far - all pretty positive but nothing to indicate there's anything glaringly wrong with my build. Someone (justly) raised the question if whether canvas would be affect approval - faux leather just doesn't drape right to my eye which is why I opted for canvas as a more cost effective alternative.

I'll pop a load of reference up in another post later on! Thanks!

Thanks man! Much appreciated! Can't wait to get out on a troop full stop tbh. Work has been so manic and transport has been an issue for me but before long I'll be out in force! Can't wait.

That's me that raised it. As one of the BMO'S here and a detachment XO myself, I would always seek clarification if someone is using something that goes against the standard and the refs, even if its proposed. The problem with your global WIP, is no detachment staff, han specialists or judges for han have posted. The han specialist seems to have been absent a while, so I pm'ed a judge.

Basically I just wouldn't want you to do lots of work for it not to be clear-able.

There are some types of faux leather can can mimic leather...its just sampling etc. David might be able to help you there, if its needed.

As promised, here's a ton of reference. I found these from various sources and a friend that has Battlefront II did some grabs of the Corellia Han skin for me.

Ahhh, that's totally fair. Truth be told I chose canvas (in addition to the cost and the drape) because it's easy to work with and it's more breathable and comfortable. For now I'm happy with canvas and if that stops my approval so be it; I'll do one in leather eventually maybe anyhow! But for now canvas is fine for me, I'd be interested to hear what the judges say!

So I spent a few hours over the last couple of days finally assembling my Corellia vest. Overall it was a fairly painless experience with the most tedious part being painting all the panels before assembly. I did this because when I made my original cheapo vest out of an old leather jacket it was an absolute nightmare painting a black vest white without contaminating the parts I wanted to keep black - so I decided to paint then sew.
Image
I started by attaching the hardware to the panels, this included the communicator, imperial disks, eyelets, and the little silver rectangle detail on the left shoulder.

Construction went along fairly easily but my god it's a chore working with pre-painted material - the main issue being that the sewing machine had to work doubly hard to get through the fabric and that it was nearly impossible to pin or press anything as I went.

Image

It was amazing to see this coming together finally - it feels like I've spent a year internalising how this vest works so it was rewarding to finally see it taking shape!

Image

Sewing in the arm hole bands was a bit of a faff but the look is its own reward. It's essentially a strip of black around each armhole that's sandwiched between the vest and the lining. The devil's in the details!

After everything was assembled and weathered I couldn't resist putting on with my shirt to see how it looked. I'm just waiting on the cabling I ordered to make the "closures" and it's done, but I just had to take some shots for Instagram!

Image
Image

With any luck the cables will arrive today and I can get some full costume shots!

So I submitted my Corellia costume a few moments ago and I must say I'm thrilled with how it turned out!

Here's some photos of the finished costume, plus the makeup application and a comparison against my original budget version which speaks for itself! Thanks for following along with this build!
