Endor Rebel Trooper -WIP

Post by scot-gcar709 » Mon Oct 14, 2019 5:04 pm

Hey everyone

Now that I have a lot more spare time on my hands, I feel the time is right to start on a new costume and I have decided to go for one from what remains my favourite film, ROTJ, so I am going with an Endor Trooper. This will probably end up being another slow build and no doubts there will be a bunch of questions as I go along, so please be ready

So looking through the standards I have had a look about for ideas of clothing that could be used although at this stage it is purely to get an ideas so I have detailed what I have found and any questions I have at this early stage.

1. Cargo-style trousers - the standards suggest BDU style. Having a quick look at an online store I saw these https://www.military1st.co.uk/k05001-2- ... oyote.html
which would then need to be painted in appropriate colours (more on this later)

2. Long-sleeved t-shirt - needs to be a beige/tan colour. I figure this should be fairly easy to find. If all else fails could get a white t-shirt and dye it.

3. Boots - standards suggest Israeli Scout Commando Boots which are close to those used in the films and they are available on Ebay https://www.ebay.co.uk/i/221639138358 Does anyone have any other recommendations or are these the best to go for?

4. Gaiters - a tube of heavy cotton covering most of laces to below mid-calf. Not too sure what to do as this suggests they aren't like the gators you might find in stores. There is a pattern on the main RL forums so I will probably attempt to make these myself.

5. Helmet - Consists of AN-H-15 cloth helmet with ribbed strip on top, and the outer ring which is so distinctive from the films. To be honest, I am unsure where to start looking for these parts so any suggestions would be appreciated.

6. Olive drab belt and pouchs - would look to purchase these from surplus store or something similar. Would get opinions when I am considering purchasing them

7. Leather work gloves- light coloured. I assume this means something like this? https://www.dickiesworkwear.com/uk/dick ... WorkGloves

8. Upper torso wear - I'll be honest the phrasing of the standards isn't too clear for me here. It talks about a combination but doesn't really clarify which ones can be matched or whether one item will do. Also can anyone clarify how long the trenchcoat should be as I have seen suggestions that lab coats can be modified to make one and this is something I would consider doing.

9. Blaster - again not to sure what I will go for on this. Will need to consider options for purchasing.

Finally, a lot of these pieces need to be painted in camo colours. The colours in the standards don't appear to be purchasable in the UK so are there any alternatives that people are aware of?

Anyway sorry for the wall of text and masses of questions and thanks for any help you can give.

Let's go through your questions.

Trousers. Coyote may be too dark. Tan, stone, beige or at worst khaki would be better. Standard bdu patterns will do. I remove any pocket buttons and sew up the hole.

2. Long sleeve tan shirt. Pretty much as you say. They're not easy to find in tan but white dyed with Dylon Sandy Beige does well.

3. The boots you linked to are ok. There is some variation in colour and the more beige and sandy tones are better. If you can find them, Palladium Pampa Hi are a good alternative.

4. Simple tube of heavy canvas with 5 to 8 pairs of eyelets laced with paracord is fine.

5. If you can't get the original, there are alternatives on etsy. Costumebase used to make one but the material was pretty nasty. Donut comes from RWA creations on the isle of wight, droidwelder and tk560 on the rl forums or 3d print or scratchbuild one.

6. US M1956 pattern is screen accurate but UK 58 pattern also works and is way cheaper.

7. Gloves are fine when they've been weathered to hell. Garden dirt, oil and boot polish all works well.

8. Swedish snow parkas can be used as a base. The swooshy duster should be getting on for ankle length and I got mine custom made by a food services place in Yorkshire.

9. A280 Endor style or E-11 are most common and look better. You can also use a DH17.

10. Oasis Floral dye can be bought in the UK in Basil, Moss, Hunter green, Holiday green and Lime flavours.

Next question please.
Happiness is a warm A280. Or A300. Even a Glie-44 at a pinch.

I think I've had a pair of the same gloves. I removed the thermal lining from them and cut the black tab off.

Hi Graeme

Re point 6, the upper wear, there's 3 different items:

Tan short-sleeve vest
Short camo combat jacket
Camo trenchcoat

This pic nicely highlights all 3:

The only "combination" you refer to is wearing the tan vest over the short jacket, highlighted above (inset).

Hope this helps!

Yeah that’s a big help. Can focus on whichever option I go for then. Still like the idea of the duster but it will depend on finding something long enough.

My duster was made from a trench coat with panels stitched to the bottom to lengthen it. The coat was a tan colour to begin with so I didn't need to mess around with any dying.
There's a picture in my old WIP thread:

Ok so decided the first part of this costume would be the duster. Got a couple of custom made lab coats made which I think look the part. They are white although the light in here makes them look yellow.

My next step is to get a long sleeved t-shirt and then dye both it and the jacket tan. Feels good to have made a start now.

I found a tan shirt on eBay, no need to dye it. Try searching for 'sand long sleeve vest'.

Cool I will have a look. I just figured that since I would be dying the jacket it might just be easier to get a white t-shirt and dye it too.

I'd suggest removing the breast pocket and any poppers. Dylon Sandy Beige pod is great for chucking in the washing machine and getting a nice even colour.

Do you have any recommendations on how to remove the poppers as they seem pretty well attached and I don’t want to ruin the coat?

Mine were held in by the little belt metal claws on them, I prised them apart and bent them back to remove them.

Ok I’ll have a look at it. I suppose that’s the advantage of buying a couple of them. Having an spare if something goes wrong
