Have you tried milliput to smooth it on. It's a putty. Great in a thin layer. I highly recommend spray paints for yours. You need a high chromosome finish which you can't get with rub n buff.

Now THATS a shiny chrome if I’ve ever seen one. Image Got some sanding stuff to do today but as this all arrives tomorrow I think I’ll start cutting patterns today.

Not knowing this build material well to comment on specifics but you've seen how that paint works really well on a smooth surface. Milliput or similar model fillers can help fill an uneven surface and allow increasingly fine grit sanding to leave a good surface to key paint onto. I prefer wet sanding with 200-400-800-1000 grit as it clogs less and leaves a nice surface for a primer or base paint coat. Some of these really metallic paints aren't very hardwearing but applying clear coat can dull them. Reaching a lasting, jewellery-level finish won't be easy.

Swapped out my sandpaper to add some wet/dry at your suggestion with really fine grits - the worbla should be fine to wet sand as it is a thermoplastic.

Grabbed some milliput as well as I haven't worked in it before and it will be good to have in the toolbox.

I'm getting an initial even out today with 120 grit, then when the stuff gets here tomorrow it's on to the long work of sanding, waiting for layers to dry, sanding, waiting for layers to dry, sanding...

Thanks for being encouraging guys, this is a labour of love for sure, but at least it keeps getting better.

That looks like a good supply list. As Geoff said, wet sanding is great to key the paint into. We know it's a pain but you'd kick yourself if you rushed it. It's worth taking the time and getting it right. It'll have more impact and you'll be chuffed to bits. Take your time. You can always do a black acrylic water wash it get some definition in the overlaying areas too.
Keep us updated as you go. Bit by bit is best! Good luck

I think we are getting closer. Spent a lot of time sanding this weekend, then I screwed it up and had to re spray paint it. But this metallic silver looks way better. Going to let it dry tonight and try to do a black wash in the cracks tomorrow then a shiny varnish clear.

Test the clear coat on a similar surface as it could dull the finish heavily.

Started some construction work on the under top mock up. I have made it open in the middle and will probably use Hook and eye take to connect it in the middle. Need to do the left side with the faux split, and I’ve made the sleeves already. I’m thinking I need to make the cape part so it attaches with the sleeves, and then I’ll need to do the hood/Vneck on top.

It could all go wrong, but that’s what £2/metre fabric is for Image

Looking alot smoother on the headpiece, id be inclined to pop a bit of a blackwash on to give it depth.

Are you draping the hood as a separate piece to the body?

I think the hood and the V neck part that extends down the chest wrap will be made in one piece, and then I will need to hand sew it on the front to hide the seams. I think I need to do the under-construction first though, as I'm trying to cut back on bulk where I can.

Have you seen this? Helps to visualise the pieces.

Padawan's Guide is a great resource for the Padme costumes. If you haven't looked already, I've attached the page for you below.

http://www.padawansguide.com/cape_makingof.shtml

So, looking at the exhibition refs, they are fairly long pieces and I think you need to test drape these so that they wrapright around the body and form the hood. The above pic helps to visualise the different wraps.

The cape appears to be two pieces but then split to be sewn around the arm hole before meeting near the shoulder where the sleeve seam is. This then creates a draped sleeve shape. It''l be tricky, but pins and tacking are your friend. Try not to drape in small sections - even for the mock up.

Finally getting a start on the under shirt wrap around mock up. I followed the padawan’s guide on the faux layers, although I made a few clunks along the way. Plan is to do what the guide suggested from the reference photos and it will close in the middle with a hidden clasp as well as on the right side.

I haven’t added the upper Shoulders/Neckline that connects to the hood yet. I think I need to cut out my cape first and get that bit lined up next before trying to engineer the pink part I drew. Plan is to hand sew it to attach along that front draping and just make it look seamlessly like it is all one part even though it isn’t.

I’m sure I’ll get lots of clunks and screw ups on the way :)
