Jack's ANH style rebel pilot

Post by Jack Lightbown » Thu Jun 11, 2020 3:56 pm

Quick disclaimer before I get into the main part of the WIP, This is the first costume that I am properly going to make, so I am going to take my time with it so i can learn more about the rebel legion and costume making as I go.

Okay here we go, this is going to be my WIP for an ANH style rebel pilot. I have made a similar outfit as a sort of test to make sure I wanted to continue with this (obviously I do), the outfit did have it's problems so i'm glad I have learnt a bit from it. That outfit was nowhere near screen accurate but I did learn some things so it was worth it.

I have a few piece that I think I can use from that outfit so I will start the WIP with those.

Image

The leg flare harness is from The Tatooine trader, on Ebay. https://www.ebay.co.uk/usr/the_tatooine ... 2749.l2754

I got a set that contained a belt and harness as well and I think those can be used with maybe a little modification.

I did make some flares but i would like to remake those or buy some better ones because the paint started rubbing off quite easily, I don't think I waited long either between coats and it caused it to be flaky. Also they were slightly to small so I added some tape around so they wouldn't fall out.

On the harness I added some velcro tabs that collect to the underside of the flak vest however they can easily rip off if you move your legs to far forward so I think I will replace these with snap fasteners so they are a bit more resilient.

Things to get:
flight suit (wampa wear)
compad (wampa wear)

code cylinders https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/6761640 ... ch_click=1

leg flares https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/7542451 ... ch_click=1

Things to source:
helmet
flight box
better flack vest
DL44 and holster
boots

Is a DL44 and holster required for clearance, I have seen people with and without and didn't find a mention of it on the requirements page?

I do have boots but they aren't real leather, I didn't see anything on the pilot requirements page that said they had to be but it does say that they need to be leather on the fleet trooper requirements page so i thought i would double check?

If you have any tips let me know I apprentice any help, i hope the images work if not i will try to add them in a follow up post.

Hey Jack!

A good and steady start, it maybe you need some stronger velcro, for your webbing or it maybe the harness is too tight.
You may also want to try adding some clear laquer to the flares, that may help with rubbing on.
Alternatively you could look at 3D printed or metal flares if you wanted. But the ones you've made are sufficient for now :)

Can i see a pic of your flight vest?
As you've mentioned a better flack vest then i would recommend either imperial boots or wampa wear. Both will need some minor alterations but its not too dramatic.

For your chest box and helmet id recommend Ross's work at RWA:

Flight Vest

I already know of a couple of alterations I would need to make to this, the plastic buckle thing on the back would have to be replaced with a black one and i'm pretty sure the connectors at the side would have to be replaced with screen accurate ones and i'm sure there are many others as well.

These are the other half of the Velcro for the harness.

The belt flares look good to me matey,

Regarding your vest, your correct you’d need to replace the back buckle as well as the side clasps. The vest looks like it’s using pleats on the front and back, the vests should have clear plastic tubing ( used in fish tanks) that act as the ribs.

Thanks Mark, the vest does use pleats should I put some tubing through them and if so do you know what diameter the tubing should be?

Hi Jack, yes you will need to push tubing through the ribs. The tube width should be 0.25 of an inch.

You should be able to get it from a pet store or online.
If possible try and find clear tubing, some can be a little blue in colour.
Its not a problem from clearance but you can tend to see the blue through the fabric :)

Another quick update: the gloves arrived earlier this week and they are very nice, the lining is very comfy.
