WIP - Liz's Rebel Fleet Trooper build

Post by VoodooBarbie » Tue Apr 10, 2018 11:04 pm

I've been in love with the rft kit for a while. The helmet is so very bizarre and Vader wants to choke oh everywhere you go 😂 it's also one of the more comfortable kits...

So, I've been fiddling with doing this one fore a while but in no great rush as I didn't have the helmet. I've pushed on with it this year under the theory that at least if I finish the kit then all I'll need is the lid. Well, I've sold a kit that's too big for me now so lid is on route!

Belt from imperial belting.
Blaster is 3d printed.
Trousers are the gray bdu's the US rl forums recommend.

Vest is 50% done. Purchased 2 black bdu shirts. One to be the base of the vest and the other to be cut up to make all the extra pockets from.

Shirt is finished. Purchased 2 light blue, long sleeved shirts. FirSt I unpicked the cuffs and removed them. Stitched the side closed, then hemmed the cuff with a 3mm hem so the shirt sleeve still ends at the right place. Next I removed the top button and sewed a popper halfway between where the top button was and the next button down, this will stop the collar gaping. Next I stitched the front of the second shirt closed either side of the buttons then removed the buttons. Being of the female persuasion , I wanted to make sure the front panel definitely covered and the sides would not be seen around the vest. I measured across my hips and across my shoulders to get the best shape and size for the front panel. I laid the second shirt flat and cut the panel from the front and back of the shirt. I ironed light weight interfacing to the piece that ariginally had buttons and stitched the front and back together along one side. Next I stitched it to one side of the shirt. I attached vecro in a few places across the top and around the side to hold the panel closed when wearing it. Then I turned the panel inside out and stitched the top and side closed. Turned it the right way out and top stitched the bottom edge closed.
(Long description but thought I would add it incase it's of use to anyone else)

Still on the look out for boots small enough for my feet (size 5)
Next up, having a go at making the holster.

One thing I forgot to add about the shirt that may come in handy for the ladies... as metioned, I am of the female persuasion and as such possess certain attributes that the OT male characters do not. When I first made the shirt, the front panel was a little stiff in shape going over the curve. In real life, we would put a dart in to help out but because it wasn't in the film I couldn't do it. What I did instead was to roughly fold it as you would for a dart and stitch a single stich on the edge. The stitch is hidden by the vest and the crease it creates just looks like a normal dip you would expect in a shirt when wearing it.

I would really appreciate any advice on boots for girly feet. I'm at most a UK 5/US 7.5 and am struggling to find accurate boots below a size 8. I don't really want to be Bobo the rft...

It is a struggle and there may have to be a compromise somewhere.
We had similar issues with that pilots with ickle feet.
My advice was also ask on the rl.com forum and see if there’s any possible vendors.
Failing that buy as close as possible and check with the dco here and possibly an lcj :)

Are RFT boots the same as x wing/tie? There used to be a lot of smaller size knobelbechers when I was looking especially on the bay of e's German site.
Happiness is a warm A280. Or A300. Even a Glie-44 at a pinch.

I'd say they look fine Liz.

Have a look at these as well:
http://www.the-lobster-pot.co.uk/old-10414.cfm

These are Italian Tank Driver boots, which are very similar to the X-Wing/RFT boots, although they're slightly shorter. The site appears to have lots of smaller sizes, 5, 6, 7 etc in stock, and in the UK as well. Some time ago we were signposting lots of our X-Wing pilots to these as they were cheaper and more plentiful than the German-style ones.

There could be an issue about the height so if you're interested, I'd suggest contacting one of the judges on the main forum to check if they would be acceptable before you buy.

My other half has size 5 feet and went with size 7 German jackboots for her pilot. Then bought some insoles and wears ski socks and they are fine. Actually it also depend on your calf muscles too as you need to get your leg in them, so don't worry about going a size or so up - actually I think it helps.
We got some from Epic Militaria which were good, and also worth getting hold of, I think, its Fiona Messer in Germany as she hunts down original German Jack boots of all sizes.

Bit late to this but you have some great advice from the guys. At a push you can also use rigger boots :)

I've spoken to the supplier I get most of my military surplus from and he says he's got a set of West German jack boots in a European size 38. This works out to UK 4.5. When you say "at most a 5", how much under are you? I can send you the supplier's details if you want to talk to him.
